Wales backs coach Rob Howley has been sent home in the World Cup for an alleged violation of World Rugby’s legislation anti-corruption and covering gambling.
The 48-year-old’s departure is a blow that is massive six days in Japan from Pool D competitions Georgia ahead of Wales’ opening match.
A Welsh Rugby Union announcement said Howley had”returned to Wales to help with an investigation”.
The WRU confirmed it had been in relation to a possible breach of gambling on rugby.
World Rugby’s law 6.3.1 reads:”No linked person shall, directly or indirectly, wager or try to bet on the result or any part of any connected event and/or receive or attempt to receive part or all of the profits of any such bet and/or any other advantage in relation to a wager.”
Wales have now shipped to Stephen Jones to fill the gap made by Howley’s surprising death and Jones is forecast to arrive”imminently” at the squad’s Kitakyushu base.
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions fly-half Jones has been confirmed as another Wales backs coach under Wayne Pivac, who’ll take the reins following the tournament out of Gatland.
The WRU announcement said:”Rob Howley has returned to Wales to assist with an evaluation in relation to a potential violation of World Rugby Legislation, specifically betting on rugby union.
“The decision was taken to act immediately in light of current information passed to the WRU. No further details can be supplied at this stage as this would prejudice the investigation.
“If needed an independent panel will be made to hear the case. Rob has co-operated fully with our talks.
“Warren Gatland has consulted senior players along with Stephen Jones will be coming at Japan imminently to link up with the squad as attack coach.”
Howley has been an integral part of manager Warren Gatland’s backroom team since the New Zealander took control.
Even the ex-Wales and Lions scrum-half was already set to leave his character.
Howley had been connected with all the Italy head coach job with present incumbent Conor O’Shea anticipated to leave next calendar year, but that now looks unlikely.
The Wales scrum-half was a part of Gatland’s backroom personnel since being named in January 2008 and was among the first backroom recruits, and played under him at Wasps.
Wales have won four Six Nations titles, including three Grand Slams, Because he became part of this coaching set-up.
Howley was in charge of Wales’ 2013 Six Nations victory when Gatland was away on an British and Irish Lions head coach sabbatical.
He was also part of Gatland’s winning Lions coaching group in the drawn series at New Zealand and Australia in 2013 .

It is sad that Rob’s got swept up in thisparticular, he’s been a tremendous trainer for Wales and this is actually the swansong for your Wales coaching team. It is a blow for everybody involved, and for Rob Howley on a private level.
I think the team will be affected. They’re lucky to have Stephen Jones, he’s incredibly optimistic person and influence. He’s someone who might come in and have a beneficial effect on the camp right away.
