Pep Guardiola says Manchester City ‘do not have many choices’ in defence

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City”don’t have many choices” in prison after he had been forced to area midfielder Fernandinho as a makeshift centre-back.
The 34-year-old Brazilian was set up along with City match senior guardian, Nicolas Otamendi, at Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Guardiola says midfielder Fernandinho has the nature and experience and Aymeric Laporte is recovering from knee surgery, although john Stones is just out for five weeks due to a muscle injury.
“I did not have doubts that he would [appear comfortable in the back four]. That’s why he’s so vital for people,” Guardiola said, after committing Fernandinho the additional obligation of captaincy in his first start of the season.
“We don’t have many choices… he is the only one that I have. Players may play in that position but Fernandinho is a player intelligent – an amazing guy.
“He’s a lot of knowledge and personality along with what he says the people today follow him from the locker room so it’s crucial.”
Fernandinho, that left two interceptions and had a passing precision of 90 per cent against Shakhtar, added:”I’ve been coaching in this place since the beginning of the season.
“Now was my opportunity, I hope I could improve. It was a quiet night at the back however, the staff have made a very good game… since we played as a group.”
