Joe Root’s job as England captain saved by Oval win against Australia, says Monty Panesar

Former Evaluation spinner Monty Panesar Believes the Success against Australia at The Oval of England Might Have rescued Joe Root from the Sofa.

England captain Root took the catch to dismiss last man Josh Hazlewood and also a success in the final and fifth Test, ensuring that his side drew the series 2-2.
However, Panesar – who played 50 Tests between 2013 and 2006 – feels Root might have dropped the captaincy if Australia had was able to condemn their hosts.
“I feel this week has rescued him,” Panesar told Sky Sports News. “If Australia had won 3-1, I believe the ECB would have been having that polite talk with him and they’d possibly ask him to step down.
“He has been batting well, but is it good for the staff he captains England as well as batting? I believe as the series has gone on his form has slightly improved.
“However he turned it around this week – he dug in deep and was able to reveal he wants to be the individual to lead England. The winter tours are going to be huge for him.
“He wants to succeed from New Zealand and South Africa and when he’s really determined to lead England, he wants to demonstrate the sort of cricket we’ve seen this week at The Oval.
“He’s obviously still very passionate and he wishes to take this challenge on. We are going to see over the winter months if he is ready to maintain his batting form as we understand Joe Root captain and can the team.
“I’m sure over the next six months the ECB will assess how he performs as a captain and also a batsman and after that they’ll make a determination.”
Root, who triumphed Alastair Cook in February 2017 as Test captain, was third in the England batting averages scoring 325 runs in 10 innings.
The series was a swansong for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who had announced his departure prior to a summer in which the national men’s team won their first 50-over World Cup.
The ECB have to mention a successor however Panesar would rather see them keep professional coaches functioning under an overall supremo’s structure.
“I believe they will have to have a single head coach and then the supporters,” he added. “Ideally I would like them to become English coaches since the ECB have invested heavily in their own coaching programmes and it is great to see that a stepping stone to the national group.
“The likes of Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick are involved in the England setup over the summer, Chris Silverwood is an excellent quick bowling coach and they have also got Saqlain Mushtaq.
