Pep Guardiola says Manchester City ‘do not have many choices’ in defence
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City”do not have lots of choices” in defence after he was forced to area midfielder Fernandinho as a makeshift centre-back.
The 34-year-old Brazilian was set up along with the only match of City chief guardian, Nicolas Otamendi, at Shakhtar Donetsk at Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win.
Guardiola says midfielder Fernandinho has the nature and experience to solve their own injury crisis and Aymeric Laporte is recovering from knee surgery, although john Stones is out for five weeks because of a muscle injury.
“I did not have doubts that he would [seem cozy in the rear four]. That is why he is so important for people,” Guardiola said, after handing Fernandinho the additional obligation of captaincy in his very first start of the season.
“We don’t have many choices… he’s the only one that I have. Players can perform in that place but Fernandinho is a player, therefore smart – an extraordinary guy.
“He’s a great deal of experience and personality and what he states the folks today follow him in the locker room so that it’s essential.”
Fernandinho, that made 2 interceptions and had a departure precision of 90 percent against Shakhtar, added:”I’ve been training in this position since the start of the season.
“Now was my chance, I hope I could improve. It was a silent night in the back however, the team have made an excellent match… as we played with as a group.”
