Jets, TE Chris Herndon feeling ‘a different energy’

As trying as the 2018 effort was for the Jets with a 4-12 revealing, rookie tight end Chris Herndon left a promising note for the Gang Green faithful.
The sole Jets freshman to locate his way onto the 2018 NFL All-Rookie Team, Herndon’s 39 catches were tops among first-year tight ends, his 502 yards receiving were instant along with his four touchdown grabs were second on the team.
Now playing for another coaching regime, Herndon is pumped up a fresh scheme, gaining confidence and sense a new energy under the Adam Gase coaching umbrella.
“Just in the jump, we’re taking shots down the field, with everyone and everybody is getting a chance to touch the ball,” Herndon said via the team website’s Ethan Greenberg. “You are feeling a different energy out there and we are just hoping to maintain this momentum that we have at this time and let that take into the next day, next camp and going into the season.”
It took some time for Herndon to catch with the Jets and fellow rookie Sam Darnold since the tight end tallied only five catches for 47 yards on seven goals across the initial five weeks of this year.
Over the last 11 weeks of the season, Herndon appeared as one of Darnold’s most dependable targets, hauling in 34 receptions for 455 yards and all four of the scores on 49 targets. Besides starting up the passing game, Herndon was a reliable blocker.
Refusing to rest upon a promising initial year, Herndon is placing in the work where and when he can in the offseason.
“I feel as if it is very important [to study movie ],” Herndon said. “You might have all the ability in the world, but if you don’t know what to do, you are not going to get much playing time. Period. Before you are able to get out there and make plays, you have to know where to be and that is probably the most crucial part. The athleticism and running comes handy .”
Considering all the analyzing comes relaxation . As training camp looms on the horizon, Herndon’s already revealed strides of improvement in most aspects.
“I think he’s a more confident player,” tight ends coach John Dunn said. “Even from getting here, prior to practicing and speaking with him and speaking with him, only his confidence [is different]. He had a fantastic year last year. And I think because of him, the more he can comprehend defenses and not just what we are doing, but what the opposing group is doing, now he can optimize his skillset.
