Back in Bob Arum’s office occupies a picture of Muhammad Ali being embraced by him.
Both guys have written on the picture, with Arum’s message “To Muhammad, the person who made it possible, with love.”
Arum, at the forefront of boxing promotion, and 87, has driven on the professions of fighters out of Ali to Manny Pacquiao.
Over letting prospective five-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather slide out of his grasp he retains no sorrow, has learned to make peace of credits and competitions bud as being key to his durability.
Arum is in Las Vegas promoting the heavyweight bout between Otto Wallin and Fury of Saturday. As we speak, his cellular phone always pings with text messages.
When he believed he would do one event he has promoted around 2,100 fight nights since 1966.
Work in the profession gave him a first glimpse of this sport, when, trying to find the US Attorney’s Office, he was instructed to seize funds increased from Sonny Liston’s fight.
“Because of that I learned the numbers but I understood nothing about boxing,” he says. “I had never seen a fight.
“Then in 1965 I met Jim Brown, maybe the best American footballer of all time, and he introduced me to Ali. Before I knew it I had been promoting Ali.
“That was the major step. I thought I’d do one fight for the kicks and get out. However, a UK promoter requested me to deliver Ali over to battle Henry Cooper at Arsenal’s old arena and, 53 years later, I’m still at it.”
After almost 60 years in a business, Arum offered BBC Sport a four-point blueprint for anybody.
Having a Harvard education, Arum had business acumen; of marketing, the craft was not natural to him.
27 bouts by Ali’s side had lasting impact in a career that found him move on to work with some of boxing’s best names. None were bigger than Ali, the first person to hold the title.
“Truly, everything I have learned about marketing and how to get attention, it began with Ali,” states Arum. “He was the greatest promoter I have ever, ever been around. He had been a excellent influence in my own life.
“I remember people would come up to me and say how good I was for thinking up all these ideas. It was awkward since they weren’t mine, they had been his.”
From changes in broadcast systems to the sway of societal media, Arum has learned to adapt to industry advances but seems one specific issue is the threat to any budding promoter.
“The hardest part of the business and it sometimes gets mad, is the fact that there is not any barrier to entry,” he adds.
“People come with cash, realizing nothing and that can be hugely debatable if folks mess up the market place.”
Arum, who resides in portion of the year at Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, has generated countless millions of dollars during his Best Rank organisation.
He could have made.
Mayweather bought himself from his contract for about $750,000 at 2006. His subsequent wealth has witnessed the choice branded”boxing’s biggest investment”.
“The mistake I made was due to my long relationship with Ali, I thought that I understood everything about the African-American neighborhood,” Arum states.
“When Mayweather kept pushing us to advertise him with this neighborhood, I thought that he didn’t understand much. However he looked at the young.
“He realised the potential and as an older man I did not. He left a fortune.
“With Andy Ruiz Jr, that we promoted, he desired enormous money for fights so we allow him to buy out his contract. He struck on the lottery and went on. Anthony Joshua was ruined by him.
“That’s existence, you can’t live on that. I’m far from angry or resentful.”
Now Arum pits his wits against the likes of Eddie Hearn at the United States in the UK and Al Haymon. Rivalries exist however he faces like his time squaring off against fellow American Don King.
King emerged as an adversary – especially when he encouraged the’Rumble in the Jungle’ between Ali and George Foreman – and stayed a threat for more than 20 years.
“He had been a tremendous competitor,” recalls Arum.
“I’d been with Ali, so I was connected to the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement in the US.
“King left me dizzy if he tried to label me a racist. It worked with fighters for some time. I discovered how to deal with that.
“He had actually no life . He’d stay up until all hours phoning to earn fights.
“When the moment arrived, we worked together on big conflicts. Is it is not all about you. If a fighter has an opportunity, you can’t let personal animosity get in the way”
Arum was 74 when YouTube was created. As we talk, he’s going to run interviews with a few of the channels of the platform that serve many of the sport fans.
“The secret to success and longevity is simple; enjoy what it is you are doing,” he says.
“I know people in this industry that are so driven but they are constantly unhappy.
“Another matter is that I understand how to unwind and what I’ve used instead of alcohol is marijuana, even when it wasn’t legal.”
Asked when he started using the material, he jokes:”As soon as I got to this company.
“It helps break your head so that when you need to make hard decisions, your brain is rested.”
For the time being, three months short there can be no rest. Arum is currently calling the shots at a fight week, again.
