Tamsin Greenway ponders the merit in implementing any of the Fast5 rules into netball
In the next part of this weeks column, Tamsin Greenway ponders about the merits (or not) of executing a number of those Fast5 rules into the complete format of netball…
Recentlythere was a questionnaire in Australia regarding what rules people would want to see changed in the game.
As the sport continues to push forward, rule changes to make itTV or bring in a wider audience will be considered
Bearing this in mind, and after the epic British Fast5 All-Stars Championships at the Copper Box last weekend, I wanted to take a look at some of the principles which were thrown around which could be thought about or implemented at the game that was seven-a-side.
I think the shooting one is quite intriguing… and probably has the maximum amount of uproar when suggesting a change.
I wouldnt wish to find long-bombs in terms of shooting outside the circle at a 60-minute game. However, I am curious about how the circle could divide into one-point along with two-point locations.
I am not stating that it needs to change in the league but weve made a game in which we have tall shooters and it is becoming harder to play in the circle unless you are close to becoming 6ft.
There are still a couple [shorter] GAs floating around but exactly that which selectors are currently looking at, and what kids know, is that you will need to have shooters that are tall to pole proportions that are shooting to make it. We went through the years of shifting every GA into a WA!
I think I believe were making that a problem with youngsters than embracing the fact that if it is possible to shoot extended and due to this we have also made a panic of shooting from long distance you should.
A few of those Australian fans were stating that they had trialled it that people just passed it out and in and making a mockery of the game when I set it out Twitter.
But, I feel that only backs up my point. Most players dont shoot from distance and Australia, alongside others, have been a key leader in this shift from the game. New Zealand only won a World Cup on shooting 17, whereas we cant overlook that.
So, the question is can it help your GAs, who will shoot from distance like a Natalie Haythornthwaite, to secure extra time on court and be in a position to play with 60 minutes there? Would group selection and strategies change?
Splitting the circle into one and two points will certainly alter the dynamic of this defence since if shooters are moving from space, the way you win ball unexpectedly becomes very different. It would also alter the functions of the shooting circle.
With one and two stage shots, particularly with a number of these blowout matches in Superleague, would it help? Look at a group such as those who finished eighth last year – will Sophie Hankin shooting Karyn Bailey and distance being in a position to rebound have changed results and matches if these things were made to two?
This is the reason why I dont feel that we ought to take it off the desk. I understand that there are a lot of traditionalists out there and that I get as it is also that I love our sport, but I think that the sport has changed in the past few years. I really dont see that theres any reason why it could not be viewed at or researched some more to see whether its a place.
Interestingly Im not a huge fan of rolling subs. A good deal of people may say it attracts impact and that it is the most easy one to change and they dont mind it.
Firstly Im not completely against it, like I do think that we do need to eliminate the dodgy timeouts – since honestly the imitation injuries are extremely simple to spot, but I can not get my mind around unlimited rolling subs. If there was a limitation to them or there was a move towards the tactical timeout that Suncorp has introduced then I would be keen.
My issues come from both a coachs and players standpoint. As a participant, in certain places it is not always so simple to go make an effect in five or six minutes at a quarter. So, unless you are with a complete shocker, as a top-level player you should have the ability to work things out and be given moment to achieve that.
I think it could easily become a justification for a lack of coaching. Its a really easy cop-out if a participant is not really doing what you want to just roll on a different sub par, try something fresh. There will be occasions this must occur but if youve completed your prep then this wouldnt be a continuous.
I always liked to give players the opportunity at things and to trust that participant to return on and send. I think we have to look at how this filters down from elite level and when the sole answer ever would be to just keep trying out new players we might lose the essence of what playing and coaching is all about.
I do not feel that it has a place at the game, although I love the Power Play Fast5, it is amazing. It is that simple in my own novel.
Together with Centre Passes I do not believe that you should be provided an additional lifeline. Shooting from space takes skill and execution, being given double things or the ball back to help get nearer excitement or games takes it a lot.
Your Centre Pass ought to be equally as powerful as your Centre Pass that is attacking. You need to have arrangements and elements that imply you could win off ball teams regardless, so I truly dont believe you need to be provided a lifeline because youre losing. Thats part of game – you win or you lose.
A vital part of netball is its what you opt to do with it and that you get the chunk 50 per cent of this time. I think that there are ways to get games that are closer and I do not believe that this is only one of these.
